Canyonville Academy Alumnus Chosen From Stony Brook as Millennium Fellow!

Record Number Applied To United Nations Group Alexandra (Sasha) Eck, 2015 Canyonville Academy alumnus, was one of the few chosen young leaders from a record number of applications (7,025) from over 1,209 campuses of 135 nations. Eleven students from Stony Brook University are excited to be a part of something so innovative along with the opportunity pursue their passions. Stony Brook reports that they are incredibly proud of their students who were selected to be Millennium Fellows. We are incredibly proud of our students who were selected to be Millennium Fellows and who are seeking to creative positive change in their communities. The selective Millennium Fellowship was launched in 2018. This semester-long leadership development program is based on students lead leadership for sustainable development-related projects that advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their communities. This Sustainable Development Goals is a part of the United Nations (UN) As a Millennium Fellows, students will participate in a leadership development program which will help them improve in areas such as: student organizing partnership building community impact skills This year’s Millennium Fellowship is set to positively impact the lives of more than 978,400 people across the globe. Alumni Reunions 2009, 1999, 1989, 1979, 1969, 1959, 1949

We have 7 amazing alumni reunion years coming up this year. Class officers will be receiving a letter/email asking when you would like to hold your class reunion. If you would like to plan your reunion here on campus during the summer month of June or August, you and your class will be able to have a tour through the campus, and through the dorms. This gives you and your classmates opportunity to see some of the new changes that have been have done, and you will be able to revisit some of your very favorite hangout spots. Things to do when you schedule an on campus reunion: Tour the dorms (see your old room and some of the updates that have been made) Tour the campus (walk through your old classrooms, across the bridge to east campus..) Visit the library (see how it’s grown!) Spend time in the chapel Visit the auditorium Walk through the cafeteria Throw some hoops in the gym Have pictures taken on campus, in a dorm or in the chapel. Brian Mucyo is Thriving In College!

Alumni Brian Mucyo is an ambitious student that has not only done well here at Canyonville Academy, but has blossomed at Grand Canyon University. Brian came to Canyonville in his junior year. While here at the Academy, Brian excelled in his classes and made many friends, whom he is still friends with today. In his senior year at this boarding school, Brian decided to apply to Grand Canyon University, and was blessed with a sponsorship for his tuition. Today, Brian is currently a part of the Honors College and works for the Academic and Career Excellence Center as both a K-12 and College Lead. Additionally, Brian has been developing and implementing an English Empowerment program for kids in Phoenix in the ACE Center. He had noticed that many students knew English, but didn’t have the confidence to express themselves with it. With this discovery, Brian decided he wanted to change this, so he is working on a complete curriculum for developing the skills these children already have. You can read more here. For Brian’s future plans, he has plans to attend law school. He would like to use his degree to help underprivileged children in developing countries receive better education and healthcare opportunity. To read more about Grand Canyon University click here

Esther Shaffer

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Esther Shaffer. Esther was the former vice president of Canyonville Academy and was the daughter in law of the school’s founder. Esther was married to Robert Shaffer who served for years as the president of the Academy. She was a lively, cheerful presence on campus for many years and was deeply loved by students and teachers. Esther Shaffer’s Godly and positive attitude helped guide this administration. Her son, Roger Shaffer, serves as secretary of the board of directors and helped Canyonville Academy achieve national academic awards. Her daughter, Adele Beck serves on our board of directors and has led the Academy alumni for many years. Our school office is named the Esther Shaffer Administration Building. We will miss her deeply but we will not forget her. Plans for a memorial celebration of her life will be announced. Doug Wead – President, Cori Burkhert – CEO, and Board of Administration

Alumni Activities 2018

Our alumni association is pleased to announce a series of events this coming Spring. Make your plans now to join us and see your old classmates and friends. May 16, 2018: Dan Johnson, CCA alumni from class of 1958, Toledo University Provost, will be briefing students, staff and alumni on our new CCA Strategic Plan – “Preparing for Our Second Century”. There will be two sessions from 2:30 – 3:30 pm and then at 3:30 – 4:30 pm. June 2, 2018: Ed John, class of 1964, former West Salem High School Principal, former Chemawa Indian School Principal, current Board Member, CCA Athletic award winner, will be speaking at our graduation. Graduation begins at 10:10am. After graduation join a luncheon reception with CCA president, Doug Wead (Class of 1964) and CCA Secretary – Board member, Roger Shaffer (Class of 1963), Carol “Pfau” John (Class of 1964) and many other alumni friends. Alumni – Board Meeting, teachers and parents invited: 7pm. In the early evening President Wead will make a formal presentation of the CCA Strategic Plan approved by the Board of Directors. All alumni will be invited to share in this moment and to participate in a discussion about the future of CCA. Alumni – fellowship. 8 pm on. Join an informal open forum discussion with other Alumni. Share stories about the past with old friends. Sing old songs. June 3, 2018: Enjoy an informal morning worship service in the CCA Chapel.

June 3rd & 4th have been named as the dates for the 2017 Reunion. Activities will get started at 1pm on Saturday June 3rd following the school graduation. All former staff and alumni are welcome. This year we will be honoring the classes of 1947, 1957, 1967, 1977, 1987, 1997 and 2007. There will be no charge for any of the events. We Welcome You Back
