Looking Back 40 Years https://www.canyonville.net/looking-back-40-years/ https://www.canyonville.net/looking-back-40-years/#respond Thu, 28 May 2015 19:48:10 +0000 http://www.ccaalumni.net/?p=2270   Looking back through the years, at these four amazing teachers that are still part of Canyonville Christian Academy, we share some of their history and what they are currently doing here on campus.  These four have spent a lot of years working at the Academy teaching, maintaining the campus, coaching and encouraging many many generations of students.   Looking Back in History 40 Years Ago… Many alumni from 1975 will remember these four faces.  As the alumni of that year are preparing to celebrate their 40th reunion, it is fun to look back and share what these four are doing today at the school. At the time (back in 1975), Esther Shaffer was working in the office as events coordinator, and as secretary of the Christian boarding school.  Roger Shaffer was busy coaching cross country, teaching classes and what ever else was needed.  Phil Jones was teaching 6 classes, coaching basketball AND furthering his education in the Sciences by taking additional classes in Ashland, Oregon.  Judy Jones was also coaching at the Christian academy, she coached volleyball and girls basketball. On Campus Today Today, Esther still lives on campus and enjoys visiting with students when they stop by.  Roger Shaffer is still teaching (Seminar Class) and is Chief Financial Officer of the school.  Phil Jones teaches Anatomy & Physiology and Biology.  Phil also works with the maintenance department of the private school as Facilities Assistant.  Judy Jones enjoys working as part of the grounds-keeping team and loves to give out hugs and chat with the students.  She says she and Phil enjoy going to all the sport games and activities.  Judy also says “We’re part of the Grandma and Grandpa cheerleading team here at CCA!” What a wonderful legacy these four have shared with students throughout the years!

Pilots Multinational Basketball Team Came Close! https://www.canyonville.net/pilots-multinational-basketball-team-came-close/ https://www.canyonville.net/pilots-multinational-basketball-team-came-close/#respond Fri, 14 Mar 2014 07:14:51 +0000 http://www.ccaalumni.net/?p=1359 Canyonville Christian Academy’s International boys basketball team made a good run at the #1 high school basketball team in the state during the opening round at the 2A OSAA tournament.  Trailing by just two points late in the game, the Pilots came up short in the closing minutes.  Final score:  Irrigon 47 CCA 37. In the consolation bracket, International Private High School CCA also suffered a 10 point loss to Central Linn, 64-54.  After a slow start, the Pilots closed to within one point in the fourth quarter but could not get the lead against the Cobras. The Eastern Oregonian titled their article:  The Canyonville Christian basketball team is multinational and multilingual.   Here’s an excerpt of that article. Basketball coach Noel Schaak has a flair for turning players with zero experience and a loose grasp on the English language into seasoned athletes.  Schaak’s team at Canyonville Christian Academy has a roster of 12 international players from the Ukraine, Rwanda, Hong Kong and South Korea. Though the team usually has local boys, too, this year it doesn’t. The boys team ended the season with a 17-8 record.

Bill Manwarren ’52 https://www.canyonville.net/bill-manwarren-52/ https://www.canyonville.net/bill-manwarren-52/#respond Wed, 04 Apr 2012 21:18:20 +0000 http://www.ccaalumni.net/?p=831 Bill Manwarren ’52 passed away in March 2012.  He was one of the legendary basketball players in CCA history.  At 6-feet 5-inches, Manwarren was a dominate center who led the Pilots to a 13-win 2-loss season in 1951-2. In an era when high school teams commonly scored 35 to 40 points in a game, he recorded back-to-back individual efforts of 37 and 39 points. His team’s only losses were a last minute upset by the JVs and a date when Manwarren and his flu-decimated teamates were required to play two games in one day at the Southern Oregon Invitational Tourney.  The Pilots played no home games in that season. Throughout his life, Bill Manwarren was a great friend of missions and was involved with Enlace Ministries.
