Excitement was in the air this past week at private school Canyonville Christian Academy as this year’s Junior/Senior Banquet (JSB) approached.

The campus was a buzz with preparation for the event. Mrs. Jami Burkhert and other staff were planning and setting up for the banquet. Boys were deciding who they were going to ask, while girls were talking about their beautiful dresses and showed them to teachers and faculty.

christian boarding school junior senior banquetFinally,  the long awaited day arrived! Although the Oregon weather was not very cooperative and it rained, the students still walked out from in front of the girls’ dorm, Hinn Hall, and had a wonderful time.

                                    All the boys looked handsome and the girls were stunning.

Many pictures were taken. Then, the Juniors and Seniors went with several faculty and staff  to Grants Pass to eat a lovely dinner of seafood and prime rib at R-Haus, which is along Rogue River.

After dinner, the students went iceskating and to the movies to watch Jurassic Park in 3-D! JSB 2013  was a fun and memorable night!

Opportunities for international students to learn outside of the classrooms at this private boarding high school are often available.

Each year the students who take Honors Business Math class, go to Harry and David’s in Medford to experience manufacturing, production, packaging, and warehouse procedures, which are multiple chapters on paper come to life.  At the end of the factory tour, they return to the retail store to taste samples and purchase some of the products they’ve seen in production during the tour.

It is important for students to apply what they learn in the classroom to real life experiences This field trip allows the students to begin understanding the importance of business math applications from pay incentives on the packing line to driving a forklift in the warehouse, or even designing special product packaging to the speed of folding the shipping boxes. The overall experience stimulates the imagination and encourages new possibilities for the future of these business math students.

Canyonville Christian Academy Seminar students jumped out to a quick $4,607 advantage two weeks into the Capitol Hill Challenge, the national investing game. In the contest, teams invest online with a hypothetical $100,000 starting position.

There are more than 2,700 teams/schools entered in the 2013 competition that runs through May 10.

This Christian Academy has placed in the top-seven four times in the final standings in prior games.

The 2012-13 Pilot cheerleaderschristian boarding school, canyonville, oregon, top international boarding school placed 6th in the OSAA state 3A/2A/1/A competition held Feb. 9 in Portland.

Although falling just short of a trophy, the girls were within striking distance of 3rd, or even 2nd place, in the closely bunched field.

The girls are coached by Jami Stansberry, who has led the team in competitive cheerleading since 2007.

“Senior Night” saw Canyonville Christian Academy’s boys basketball team reverse an earlier loss to Milo Adventist Academy by a 49-41 score on Feb. 5.

This win earns CCA a 10-6 season record with one game remaining on the schedule.

The Pilots’ stingy defense has given up more than 55 points in a game just once this season.  CCA’s boys are coached by Noel Schaak, who has led the team since the 2004-5 season.

On February 6, U.S. Olympic javelin thrower Cyrus Hostetler spoke to Canyonville Christian Academy’s student body.

Hostetler (272.10 personal best throw) is a 2-time Pac-12 champion, a Silver medalist at the 2011 Pan-American Games, and competed at the 2012 London Olympic Games.  His story was a powerful testimony about perseverance.  CCA students responded very well and surrounded Cyrus afterwards for autographs and photo opportunities.  His testimony encouraged some students to try out for track this season.

In their best defensive outing of the season, Canyonville Christian Academy’s boys held a strong (12-6) Camas Valley team to just 11 points in the 2nd half as the Pilots pulled away for a 38-26 win.

For Camas Valley, the state football champs, it was their lowest point total of the year.

In a earlier game, CCA outscored Umpqua Valley Christian in the second half but were unable to overcome the halftime deficit.  Final score was a narro 48-52 loss for the Pilots.

In week three, the CCA boys’ basketball team picked up their 6th win and 2nd loss.

The win was by a 51-24 margin over North Douglas; the loss was to Crow (7-1).

The Pilots were led by Joe Chen (22 points) and Serge Sandrali (16 points) in the two weekend games.

2013 has arrived at Canyonville Christian Academy and students are back from Christmas break ready to finish their first semester strong!

The basketball teams started their season well, and upon returning here after the break, are continuing to practice and ready to play hard for the rest of this season!  Cheerleaders are also continuing to train, cheering for the Pilots, while preparing to compete against other cheerleading squads from all across Oregon.
